  • Size and Color
With a wingspan of 123mm, or 4.8 inches, this is one of the smallest drones available. The 1SQ V-Cam is one of the lightest drones you can buy, weighing in at 31 grams or 0.1 pounds. As far as color goes, it is available in blue, green, red, white, and yellow.
  • Dimensions 145 x 145 x 35 mm
  • Body Material: Plastic
  • Rotor Material Plastic
  • Motor Type Brushed
  • Available Colors: Blue, Green, Red, White, Yellow

Possessing a flight time of 12 minutes, the 1SQ V-Cam can fly for a slightly above average amount of time compared to the average of 8 minutes. The flight time measurement given is the amount of time the drone will fly with no additional weight added, so keep in mind that as you add additional weight, the flight time will decrease. Using solely a remote control for operation, the 1SQ V-Cam can be flown up to 150 meters (492 feet) away from you. Compared to the average controllable range of 100 meters, you can control the 1SQ V-Cam from 50 meters (164 feet) further away.

Battery capacity is the most accurate way of determining overall battery life, and with a 250 mAh battery. The smaller battery also makes its overall weight lighter, which may be a desired trait for you.

Starting out the list with the highest price, the Heli-Max 1SQ V-Cam is an inexpensive way to start trying out aerial video and photography. This cheap drone comes equipped with a 720p camera for videos or still photos controlled by a transmitter, with the main benefit being able to start and stop video recording while in flight. As far as flying goes, the Heli-Max 1SQ V-Cam has the added benefit of four individual rotors for more stable and easier flight. If you’re not looking for a cheap drone with a camera but the Heli-Max 1SQ V-Cam has caught your eye, the Heli-Max 1SQ is the model without a camera and goes for about $100.

  • Size and Color
With a wingspan of 474mm, or 18.7 inches, this drone is above average in size. The U818A HD is of average weight for a drone, weighing in at 346 grams or 0.8 pounds. As far as color goes, it is only available in black.

  • LED Lights: Yes
  • Foldable: No

Possessing a flight time of 8 minutes, the U818A HD can fly for an average amount of time. The flight time measurement given is the amount of time the drone will fly with no additional weight added, so keep in mind that as you add additional weight, the flight time will decrease.

Using solely a remote control for operation, the U818A HD can be flown up to 40 meters (131 feet) away from you.

Battery capacity is the most accurate way of determining overall battery life, and with a 500 mAh battery. However, a smaller battery capacity also means that the overall weight is lower, which can still translate to a desired flight time.

The newest version of the well-known UDI U818A, the HD+ takes the maneuverability and durability of the original model and adds a few new features to make a cheap drone that will be especially appealing to new pilots. One new feature is the return home mode, getting the drone back to you with the ease of a button. Another feature is what’s called headless mode, allowing you to get the hang of flying without worrying about what way the drone is pointing. The HD+ also features an upgraded 720p with a 4GB SD card included. They also throw in an extra battery to double your fly time. The original UDI U818A is another cheap drone worth mentioning at about $45, but doesn’t include the return home, headless mode, or upgraded camera featured on the HD+.

3. AIR HOGS HELIX X4 STUNT – $100

  • Size and Color

The flight time measurement given is the amount of time the drone will fly with no additional weight added, so keep in mind that as you add additional weight, the flight time will decrease.

Out of all the cheap drones listed, the Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt is probably the most durable. The frame is made of dense foam, so this is a cheap drone made to definitely take a crash and keep flying. Ducted fans make for more stable flight and means the propellers are protected by foam bumpers.

Like its name suggests, the Helix X4 Stunt has no problem busting out aerial tricks with its easy one-button rolls and flips. While the foam frame is durable, it’s also very light, so this drone is going to fly best indoors.

4. SKY VIPER V950 HD– $90

  • Size and Color
The V2900 Pro is of average weight for a drone, weighing in at 339 grams or 0.7 pounds. As far as color goes, it is only available in black.

While this isn’t the highest possible resolution available built into a drone, it will be able to satisfy most of your video recording needs.

The Sky Viper V2900 Pro combines the features of a separate remote control with the visual appeal and ease-of-use of a smartphone/tablet. It is best operated when using the two in combination, which requires that you download the Sky Viper Flight Simulator app onto your compatible mobile device. Connected mobile devices are most commonly used for a first-person viewing angle from your airborne drone, so it is not absolutely necessary that you use the two together in order for the drone to fly.

Battery capacity is the most accurate way of determining overall battery life, and with a 2,000 mAh battery, the V2900 Pro uses an above-average sized battery to power its flight, compared to the average of 650 mAh. While an above average battery capacity should translate to longer flight times, it’s also important to account for the takeoff weight when estimating flight time.

The Sky Viper V950 HD is a cheap drone with some very cool camera features for anyone wanting to get into aerial videography and photography.
The V950 HD’s 720p camera comes with a 4GB SD card and is adjustable up to 130 degrees with the added bonus of simply pressing a button to capture full 360 degree panoramic views mid-flight, a feature rarely seen at this price point.
This cheap drone doesn’t skimp on fun flying either, allowing for aerial stunts like barrel rolls with the easy touch of a button. The Sky Viper V950 HD also has a resilient polypropylene frame, just in case one of those barrel rolls turns into a nose dive.

  • Foldable: No

Using solely a remote control for operation, the X4 Camera H107C can be flown up to 100 meters (328 feet) away from you. This is the average controllable range for a drone. A smaller battery capacity also means that the overall weight is lower, which can still translate to a desired flight time.

The Hubsan X4 H107C is a very popular cheap drone, mainly because it comes with features that are appealing to both beginners and more advanced pilots.
The main feature with this broad appeal is the X4’s two separate modes, Beginner and Expert. Beginner mode gives you less sensitivity during flight to get the hang of the controls, while Expert mode gives a boost to controls’ sensitivity and the ability to do front, back, and sideways flips.
The latest X4 H107C model has been updated with a higher quality 720p camera and the package also comes with a second battery for more flying time. This cheap drone is small enough for indoor flight, but can handle moderate to heavy winds despite its compact design.

The Blade Nano QX RTF Quadcopter is a versatile cheap drone with great features to get the hang of flying indoors. One of the main features beginners will enjoy about the Blade Nano is its SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology, which helps with two very necessary skills for beginners: taking off and not crashing.

This cheap drone also has two modes of flight: a stability mode while you’re practicing your pilot skills, and agility mode for more advanced maneuvers and greater speeds. Whichever mode you’re flying in, the Blade Nano can also just hover in the air if you need to take a break.

  • Dimensions: 140 x 140 x 38.1 mm

In order to fly the Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider, you’ll need to download the FreeFlight 3. app onto your compatible smartphone or tablet. The app will only work on devices featuring at least Android 4.0 and iOS 7.0 or later, so be sure that your device has the right software installed.

The Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider is a cheap drone with the cool flexibility of having two different ways to pilot. Either fly it normally with the propellers or attach the wheels to roll up the wall, ceiling, or across the floor.

Another unique feature is this cheap drone is controlled through your smartphone or tablet with the Freeflight 3 application, which also includes programmed stunts like flips and spins. The Syma X5C Explorers, classified as a quadcopter, is controlled by a standalone remote controller, which means you’ll probably have to practice using it to get the hang of the controls. At $45, the X5C Explorers is less expensive than the average for a drone. It is commonly used for film & photography, but in the end, what you use it for is up to you.

Battery capacity is the most accurate way of determining overall battery life, and with a 500 mAh battery, the X5C Explorers contains a below average battery capacity compared to the average of 650 mAh. However, a smaller battery capacity also means that the overall weight is lower, which can still translate to a desired flight time.

The Syma X5C is a very popular cheap drone for beginners. It doesn’t have a lot of extra features, but for the low price you get a stable and responsive quadcopter great for learning. Everything you need to know about drone

NOT ALL DRONES ARE EASY TO FLY

If you want to buy a drone, you should first know that anything that flies is going to be hard to control. A typical quadcopter is actually physically impossible to fly, but what keeps it stable is the computer inside. Every drone flies slightly different depending on how the flight controller is setup. Some flight controllers are setup for more agile flying, while others might be geared more towards stability.

When it comes to flying and skill level, there’s this magical price curve that nobody really talks about. I call it the “price vs ease-of-use curve”. Normally, with radio control cars, planes or helicopters when the price goes up, the difficulty level increases. However, with drones that isn’t the case. Here’s a simple graph to illustrate what I’m talking about. The ease-of-use value goes from 0 to 10 and the price value goes from $0 to $1,000. Looking at the graph you can see that the easiest drones to fly are in the $700 range. The reason why more expensive drones fly better is because of the added sensors and functionality to the flight controllers inside.

NOT ALL DRONES ARE READY TO FLY

When you’re looking at drones to buy, you’ll see a few common acronyms that pop up, RTF, BNF and ARF.

  • RTF stands for Ready-To-Fly. Usually an RTF quadcopter doesn’t require any assembly or setup, but you may have to do some simple things like charge up the battery, install the propellers or bind the controller to the quadcopter (get them talking to each other).
  • BNF stands for Bind-And-Fly. A BNF quadcopter usually comes compleatly assembled, but without a controller. With BNF models, you’ll have to use the controller that you already have (if it’s compatible) or find a controller sold separately. One thing you should know is that, just because a transmitter and receiver are on the same frequency that doesn’t mean that they’ll work together. In the analog days, if you had a transmitter and receiver both running on the same frequency they were almost guaranteed to work together. Now with digital communication that’s all changed. Even If your transmitter and receiver are on the same channel, they must use the same manufacture protocol in order to talk to each other. So check to make sure that your controller will work with your drone before buying it.
  • ARF stands for Almost-ready-to-fly. ARF quadcopters are usually like quadcopter kits. They usually don’t come with a transmitter or receiver and might require partial assembly. An ARF drone kit might also leave out components like motors, ESCs, or even the flight controller and battery. The definition of an ARF drone kit is vary very broad, so whenever you see ARF in the title, you should read the description thoroughly.

YOU NEED TO MAKE INVESTMENTS UPFRONT

If you just want something to fly around the house for $50, then this section doesn’t really apply to you, but if you’re looking at spending hundreds (maybe even thousands) of dollars then you need to invest your time and money wisely.

Here are just a few things that “I did not do” when I first started out with my first drone, that would’ve helped me drastically later on.

  • Invest in a good controller. Getting a good controller is one of the best investments you can make. Controllers (unlike smartphones) don’t get outdated very quickly, so if you’re planning on being in the hobby for a while, you’re going to want to get a controller that will last at least a couple years. I know of a few people that have been using the same controller for over 10 years. The reason why you can make one last so long, is because the “transmitter” part is removable so that you can upgrade it to work with different or newer communication technologies in the future.
  • Buy a good charger. I know it seems crazy to spend a lot of money for a battery charger, but just like with your controller, a good charger is going to last for years. Cheap chargers that come with RTF drone kits usually charge slow, are not very reliable, and can usually only charge the battery that they come with (nothing bigger). So one day, when you buy a bigger drone you’ll need a bigger charger anyway. The more expensive chargers can charge pretty much any battery you can think of, from lithium polymer to lead acid. You can even buy adapters for charging more then one battery at a time.
  • Invest in research. I know that buying your first drone is exciting, but it’s not something you should rush. The more research you do, the more knowledge you’ll gain, and eventually you’ll start to understand the differences between all of the drone parts out there and the reasons why one part might be better then the other. This can save you a lot of time and money in the long run because you won’t be buying bad products, making bad decisions, wasting money and going through everything blind.

Advice

If you are a beginner at drones you need to be careful at driving them. It’s not so easy at the beginning, so you have to do everything really slowly so you don’t damage anything on the drone. It would be perfect if you could practice at some open place where there are no people you could hurt. You should read some manual or watch some video first on how to fly with the drone. Try to practice with small speed then later when you get in driving you can go up higher and higher but don’t fly out of range because your drone can crash and then you’ll need to buy another one again. So be careful!
